Welcome to our Technology Centre.
The nature of our business often requires us to use technical terms to define materials and/or procedures. We take these terms for granted and we are comfortable with their usage, but we're sometimes asked explain a technical term to our clients. With this in mind we thought it would be a good idea to build a glossary of terms that we use, so we can provide a full definition of each - and help to clarify any ambiguities, such as distinguishing between terms that share common abbreviations for example.
So this is the place where you can find out exactly what an industry term means. This Technology Centre is an on-going project for us and we're aiming to build it into a complete resource to be referred to time after time.
It is presented in alphabetical order for ease of use - and it has a helpful search facility to help you to find the term you need explained quickly and easily.
If you need help in using this Technology Centre please email us. |

Acrylic:
Acrylic: Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic, often used as a light or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Chemically, it is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. The material was developed in 1928 in various laboratories, and was first brought to market in 1933 by Rohm and Haas Company, under the trademark Plexiglas. It has since been sold under many different names. PMMA is an economical alternative to polycarbonate (PC) when extreme strength is not necessary. It is often preferred because of its moderate properties, easy handling and processing but behaves in a brittle manner when loaded, especially under an impact force, and is more prone to scratching compared to glass, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylic_glass..

AFP:
Anti-finger print.
A wide range of uses will benefit from an Anti-fingerprint surface treatment including applications such as: electronic display screens (e.g., liquid crystal displays, CRT displays, plasma displays, projection TVs), consumer appliances, Surfaces that are routinely subjected to touch are commonly stained with fingerprints, skin oil, sweat, and cosmetics when used. Once the surface is contaminated, the stains are not easily removed, or cleaning materials are needed. Dirt and fingerprints on surfaces that have an anti-reflective coating are very sensitive to surface contamination and can be easily cleaned..

AMLCD:
Active-matrix liquid crystal display.
These are the most popular type of monitors on the market today however there are many different active matrix displays and each display is associated with a specific physical display resolution, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active-matrix_liquid_crystal_display..

Anti:
'Anti' is a word that is commonly used within the electronic display industry, please look for your specific terminology within our technology centre. We have listed a few
examples: * Anti Finger Print / * Anti Glare / * Anti Newton
/ * Anti Reflective / * Anti Abrasion / * Anti Fog / * Anti Graffiti / * Anti Mist / * Anti Reflection / * Anti Scratch / * Anti Smudge / * Anti Static..

Anti Abrasion:
An Anti Abrasion or scratch-resistant coating is applied to plastic display surfaces, The coating does not interfere with how the surface function and does not affect vision, although an anti-abrasion coating is not 100% scratch-proof, it helps to prevent minor scratches that can easily happen to a regular display..

Anti Fog:
Optiguard™Anti Fog coating can be applied to the rear surface of a display screen to prevent any Fog / Mist /
Moisture vapour forming on the rear surface which can greatly reduce visibility of the display.

 |
|
| |
Anti Glare:
Anti-glare coatings are designed to cut down on the amount of light that reflects off a display. Reflected light or glare is very fatiguing to the eyes and reduces the contrast, colours and sharpness of the display. For example an anti-glare screen makes viewing a display more pleasant, reduces eyestrain, and sharpens the picture. An anti-glare screen is standard on most LCD monitors, this type of anti-glare screen works by using the rough ‘matte surface’ of the display to scatter light, rather than allowing it to reflect off a smooth surface..

Anti Graffiti:
Optiguard™ Anti-graffiti
A Specially developed coating to repel inks, paints
and other forms of fluids to protect electronic display
screens from graffiti contamination, Optiguard™ also
has additional abrasion resistance properties, http://www.displaywindows.com/pdfs/Specialist_Optiguard_Coatings-2.pdf..

Anti Newton:
The phenomenon of Newton's rings named after Isaac Newton, it is an interference pattern caused by the reflection of light between two surfaces, light and dark rings interfere at different thicknesses of the air layer between the surfaces. By applying our Optiguard™ non-glare hard-coat to both sides of material surfaces that are in contact to one another we can eliminate the effect of Newton’s ring therefore creating an Anti-Newton solution, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton's_rings..

Anti Reflection:
An anti-reflection (AR) coating is a type of optical coating applied to the surface of lenses and other optical devices to reduce reflection. This improves the efficiency of the system since less light is lost. In complex systems such as a telescope, the reduction in reflections also improves the contrast of the image by elimination of stray light. Anti-reflection coatings are part of a larger family of “thin film” coatings which can be deposited onto a transparent media by a process of vacuum deposition, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-reflective_coating..

Anti Static:
An antistatic agent is a compound / coating used for treatment of materials or their surfaces in order to reduce or eliminate buildup of static electricity generally caused by the triboelectric effect. Its role is to make the surface or the material itself slightly conductive, either by being conductive itself, or by absorbing moisture from the air, so some humectants can be used. The molecules of an antistatic agent often have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas, similar to those of a surfactant; the hydrophobic side interacts with the surface of the material, while the hydrophilic side interacts with the air moisture and binds the water molecules, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-static.
